4/5S Mental Health Team Up

Gareth from the School Sports Partnership was back in class this morning to continue our work on knowing our own brains.

This week he introduced us to ‘The Lizard’ which refers to the amygdala portion of the brain. Gareth told us that ‘The Lizard’ can sometimes take over in certain situations and can  cause our bodies to fight, flight, flop or freeze. He told of the importance of keeping our amygdala in the “friend zone” where we can control it. This might mean having routines or rituals to prepare us for stressful situations or coping mechanisms when we feel it is near. We all then practised some breathing exercises to help us keep ‘The Lizard’ on our side.
