4/5S Routines and Autumn Term Curriculum

Dear Parent/ Guardian,

Welcome to Class 4/5S! All the children are now settled in their new class and have begun their curriculum for the upcoming year. I would like to share with you the routines the children can expect and give some more information about the topics they’ll be study in the Autumn term.

Key Information:

PE: Please ensure that your child has their full PE kit (shirt, shorts and trainers) in school everyday. We highly recommend that children have a separate P.E. bag which remains in school throughout the week. This half-term also sees Class 4/5S go for swimming lessons every Monday for which children will require appropriate swimming kit.

Homework: Homework will be given out each Friday with children having until the following Wednesday to hand in completed work. Some homework may be set using the Mathletics and Lexia online programmes. If there is an issue with internet connection or logins for either programme please let school know so alternative provision can be made.

Spellings: Children will be given their spellings on a Monday and will be tested on them on a Friday. The vast majority of spellings will look at the investigation of a spelling rule which should be practised rather than learning spellings by rote.

Class Dojo: We will be operation the Class Dojo app in 4/5S this year. Your child should have brought a sign-up letter home which allows you to connect to our class. If you haven’t received this letter or have been unable to access this please let me know. The app will be used alongside the school website for reminders of events and can be used to inform the class teacher of any items that may previously have been delivered in a note.

4/5S Curriculum:

As historians, we will be studying Ancient Greece. We will look at the Ancient Greek way of life, their achievements, and their influence on the Western World.

As geographers, we will locate countries, using maps to focus on Europe concentrating on environmental regions, key physical/ human characteristics, countries, and major cities.

As Scientists, we will be comparing and grouping together everyday materials on the basis of their properties, including their hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity and response to magnets.

In RE, we will be studying the concepts of creation and fall. We will reading and analysing the book of Genesis and the looking at the different ways it is interpreted by Christians today.

As artists and designers, we will develop and master our techniques and study a number of great artists, architects and designers.

In PSHE, we will identify, reflect on and express pride in our own achievements, strengths and skills.

In computing we will use a range of software to study coding and improve our digital literacy and abilities to remain safe online.

We are all looking forward to a fantastic term with your children as they begin their journeys in Year 4 and 5. If you have any questions about our routines and curriculum, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Yours Sincerely,
Mr Clarke
Class 4/5S Teacher
