6G/6S 23.04.2020 Geography Tasks

Year 6 – Geography

Hello, one and all. I hope you are all well and keeping safe. Here are a few geography tasks for you to be working through. This topic is based on compass work and familiarising yourself with locations across the UK and parts of Europe. Try your best and if you have any problems you can contact us on the school app.

Task One:

Use a pencil and a ruler to accurately draw a four- point compass, plotting correctly the directions N, S, E, W, (North, South, East and West). If possible, use a protractor to help you. (If you have any problems, you will be able to find a compass online. Also, all iPhones come with a built in compass).

Task Two:

Accurately draw an eight-point compass, adding the directions NE, SE, NW, SW. Think, NE (North East) will be found between N (North) and E (East).

Task Three:

Accurately draw a sixteen-point compass, adding the directions NNE, ENE, NNW, WNW, SSE, ESE, SSW, WSW. Think, NNE (North, North East) will be between N (North) and NE (North East).

Task Four:

Log on to Google Maps, or download a map of the UK, or use an atlas. Find Darlington, (we’re in the North East of England). Use your compass to help answer the following questions. In which direction would you need to travel in order to reach the following places?

  1. Middlesbrough
  2. Sunderland
  3. Durham

Task Six:

Look at a map of Europe and find:

Use your map to answer the following questions.

  2. Which city is furthest south, Madrid or Barcelona?
  3. Which city is furthest east, Rome or Berlin?
  4. Which city is furthest west, Dublin or Belfast?

Task Seven:

Investigation work. Are the following statements true or false?

  1. Edinburgh, in the north east of Great Britain, is further west than Bristol, in the south west of Great Britain?
  2. The most northerly point of Ireland is not in Northern Ireland. It’s in the Republic of Ireland (sometimes unofficially referred to as the South or Southern Ireland).
