PE

Our vision is to provide an excellent, well-rounded education which celebrates academic, emotional and spiritual achievement and prepares everyone to fulfil their full potential in an inclusive environment in God’s World.

Intelligence and skills can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong.” J F Kennedy

‘Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.’ Nelson Mandela, 2000 ‘COACH ME and I will learn. CHALLENGE ME and I will grow. BELIEVE IN ME and I will win’.

As stated in the National Curriculum Purpose of Study for PE, ‘A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.’

At St George’s, our PE curriculum is underpinned by the above statement and we believe that PE is an essential part of children’s development throughout the school, from our youngest children in Nursery, through to the young adults we hand over to the next phase of their lifelong journey.

The following aims are embedded within our teaching and are central to the engaging lessons where our children encounter a range of opportunities to explore PE in all its forms.

We aim for all pupils to:

• develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

• be physically active for sustained periods of time • engage in competitive sports and activities

• lead healthy, active lives.

At St George’s Academy, we provide a safe and supportive environment for children to flourish in a range of different physical activities which is essential in supporting their physical, emotional, spiritual, social and moral development. We strive to create a culture which aims to inspire an active generation to enjoy PE, encourage each other and achieve.

At St George’s Academy, we offer a dynamic, varied and stimulating programme of activity to ensure that all children progress physically through an inspirational, unique and fully inclusive PE curriculum. We encourage all children to develop their understanding of the way in which they can use their body and equipment safely yet imaginatively to achieve their personal goals.

All children have the opportunity to enjoy being physically active, maintain a healthy lifestyle and use the medium of sport to increase their self-esteem. We aspire for children to adopt a positive mind-set and believe that anything can be achieved with determination and resilience.  Children are reminded that it is acceptable to get things wrong and even experience difficulties when faced with challenges and anything new or unfamiliar. Teachers use these experiences to address mistakes and misconceptions as an essential part of learning and enable the children to learn in a curious and safe environment, which in turn allows all children to flourish.

At our school, our approach is to provide all children full access to the curriculum in order to achieve their full potential. This also includes our SEND children who have challenging activities provided for them suited to their needs. We strive to help children apply their skills and knowledge in a range of different contexts in the wider world and we want all of our children to develop confidence, experience success and recognise the enjoyment which PE can bring.

The aim of Physical Education is to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles. Children are taught to observe and produce the conventions of fair play, honest competition and good sporting behaviour as individual participants, team members and spectators. This enabled them to embed life-long values such as co-operation, collaboration and active participation. Children in KS2 are provided with swimming instruction and are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently, aiming to cover a distance at least 25m by the end of Year 6. Children are taught to perform safe self-rescue in different water based situations in line with National Curriculum Expectations.

Our PE Curriculum, along with PSHE and Science, teaches children about the importance of healthy living and learning about the need for good nutrition.

At St George’s, we aim for children to develop the necessary knowledge and skills which will have a positive impact on their future by becoming physically active citizens to benefit their long-term health and well-being.

On Saturday 19th November, 16 children from St George's who had put their names forward to be selected for the Darlington FC Season Tickets were randomly selected to take part in the Matchday Experience. The children had a great time with the Darlington FC Foundation coaches and got to see Darlo win 4-1 in the FA Trophy. The boys and girls from St George's got to do some football on the pitch before the game, meet Mr Q, wave the flags as the players came out of the tunnel, a free goody bag and lunch and also take penalties in front of the Tin Shed at half time. The boys and girls had a fantastic day and we would like to thank Barry and the foundation for their hospitality and thanks to all the parents who attended and supported.
