National Numeracy Day

The children in RS celebrated their love for maths by engaging in a variety of exciting, hands-on activities. They built foundational skills by singing familiar number rhymes and writing numbers with the help of the Number Blocks, before designing and playing their very own mathematical board games using simple addition and subtraction. The class also took a big step forward in their learning by introducing the concepts of a number sentence and the symbols + and =, which they used while recapping their number bonds to 5 and 10. These fantastic celebrations perfectly complemented the children's daily routine, which includes running their own snack shop to practice using money and calculating the class attendance each morning.

Easter Garden Competition

We are delighted to share that Mrs Skirving has chosen Alex as the winner of our Easter Garden competition—well done, Alex! We were so impressed with all of the wonderful entries, and each child who took part will also receive a prize.
Thank you to everyone who participated. It has been a fantastic way for the children to share their knowledge, creativity, and enthusiasm.

This afternoon we enjoyed a lovely spring walk along the same route we explored in winter, and it was wonderful to spot some changes. The fields are becoming bright with rapeseed, and we noticed delicate fig buttercups. Along the way, we listened carefully to the sounds around us, hearing cheerful birdsong, aeroplanes passing overhead, and even a tractor hard at work in the distance. We also made a special stop to visit the horses, which the children always enjoy.

British Science Week 2026

Today in RS we became little investigators during our Peggy Problem activity. The children explored different types of clothes pegs to see which ones had the strongest grip. Using a washing line and socks, they added marbles and pebbles to make the socks heavier and tested which pegs could hold them the best.
The children talked about ideas such as heavy and light and which pegs were stronger. They worked together to test their ideas and then shared what they discovered by drawing pictures of their findings. It was wonderful to see their curiosity, teamwork and problem-solving skills in action!

🎊🐉 Class RS Busy Days Celebrating Chinese New Year! 🐉🎊

RS has had a wonderfully busy and exciting couple of days back at school learning all about Chinese New Year! The children have been discovering how families prepare for and celebrate this special festival.

We have explored:
🧹 The importance of cleaning and preparing homes for good luck
🏮 Making our own beautiful lanterns
🎨 Creating festive paintings and decorations
💰 Counting money carefully into red wallets
🐲 Learning about dragon and lion dancing (and even trying some moves ourselves!)
🥟 Discovering traditional foods enjoyed during the celebrations

It has been fantastic to see the children so engaged, curious, and enthusiastic in their learning. They especially enjoyed the creative activities and learning about different cultural traditions around the world.

It was a pleasure to take RS to Hopetown, they truly represented our school in the best possible way. We hope they have come home excited to share what they learned with you!
The staff at Hopetown commented on how polite, respectful, and engaged the children were. They were especially impressed with the children’s knowledge and the thoughtful questions they asked during the activities.

Shrove Tuesday (one day early!) 🥞

In today’s learning, RS explored Shrove Tuesday, learning about its traditions and why people eat pancakes before the start of Lent. We talked about pancake races and how families celebrate, before enjoying our own pancake tasting with lemon and sugar, chocolate, and honey toppings with each topping proving very popular!

Children’s Mental Health Week 💡❤️

This week in PSED, we have been celebrating Children’s Mental Health Week. We have spent time looking at ways to take care of our mental health, in an age appropriate way, focusing on a sense of belonging.

We talked about what belonging means to us- a feeling of safety, love and being valued. With that in mind, we focused our learning around our classroom environment as it is a place of safety, shared loved and shared value for everyone in RS. In order to understand the feeling of belonging, we looked at which provision areas in our classroom we felt safe and happy playing in and what we liked to do in those provision areas to keep our minds feeling happy. We displayed these ideas on a map we designed of our classroom, placing our faces in the areas we chose and by drawing what we enjoyed doing in those areas with our friends and teachers.

If we peeked inside your heart, what would we find? ❤️
A window into what matters the most to our little people, people and things that make them feel safe, loved and love big hearts

06.02.26

This week we have been looking at images from the past and present, this opened up some wonderful comparative language and made me feel very old 😅
We looked at features of everyday items and transport - especially trains, as we prepare for our trip to Hopetown. We looked at all images in black and white first then added the colour images and sorted them according to our conclusions. This made the children really think about their own experiences, what was the same and different - laying the foundations of a basic history lesson.

27.01.26

We enjoyed a lovely winter welly walk around the school grounds, splashing through shallow and deep puddles and exploring lots of seasonal treasures such as old seed pods, berries, holly, ivy and bare trees. It’s not every day you come across the bus stop sign either, which fitted in perfectly with our transport theme! We finished our chilly adventure by warming up together with a comforting drink of warm juice or hot chocolate.

Something a little bit different in PSED this week- food tasting 🥐 ….and we loved it!

Very proud of everyone is RS today, everyone had a go at trying the foods on offer and they were a massive thumbs up from the majority of us 👍🏻☺️

First PE Session 🌟

This morning we have had our first formal PE session and we LOVED it.

This term we are focusing on the fundamentals of balance, cooordination and agility. Today our objective was to develop balancing whilst stationary and on the move.
We practised moving at different speeds and in different directions before stopping with control and placing different body parts on the floor. We then developed the skill of a one foot balance and tried to hold this balance for 3 seconds.

Well done RS 🌟☺️

09.01.26

An excellent back to school week for RS. All the children adapting back to the classroom routine’s extremely well after the festive period.

In mathematics we have been looking at collections of objects and repeating patterns, especially learning about a “unit of repeat”. We have produced some wonderful winters patterns of our own as a result.

Christmas Tree Designs

The children have used playdough to shape and build their own Christmas trees, carefully moulding the dough with their hands to create the tree form around a foam piece. They then chose and placed small decorations—such as beads, sequins, or bells —onto their playdough trees, arranging them in their own way. Through this activity, the children expressed creativity, practiced fine motor skills, and made unique Christmas trees that reflected their individual ideas and preferences.

Anti-Bulling Week 2025 ✨💓

Our focus for Anti-Bulling Week this year was ‘Power for Good’.
Odd Sock Day provided an opportunity to have fun and spread awareness about how bulling can affect ourselves and others, what to do if we are worried, ways in which we can be kind to our friends, look after our friends and treat each other with respect.
We talked about how we are all unique and how important it is to be kind to others, regardless of those differences.

In RS, we read ‘Simon Sock’ by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet, which demonstrates the idea of two friends being very different, but how they still share a lovely friendship at the same time. We then got creative with colours, glitter and glue to design our own odd sock friends.

10.11.25

RS had a wonderful time during our Music Monsters workshop! The children were introduced to the ideas of loud and quiet sounds, learning the musical words forte and piano. They practised using all their fingers to play notes on the keyboard and explored simple rhythms using crotchets and crotchet rests. Everyone enjoyed taking turns to play individually before coming together to perform as a whole orchestra. It was an exciting first experience that filled the room with music, teamwork, and smiles!

Autumn Walk 2025

We spotted so many leaves, berries, mushrooms and worms! As well as the odd pine cone, acorn and squirrel 🐿️! So many aeroplanes that we could hear but couldn’t see due to the thick cloud.
A lovely welly walk today.

Sometimes, a masterpiece takes a team effort 🎨 🚘 🛑 👀👂

Today, in PHSE we have been learning about Road Safety. We have discussed the role of the lollipop person, the rules for crossing a road safely with an adult- we know to STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and WAIT until it is safe to cross, we have looked at different types of road crossings for pedestrians and the role of the red and green man.

03.10.25

On a Friday, the children in RS engage in our PHSE curriculum. This week we have been focusing on kindness and the qualities it takes to be a good friend. We read the book ‘ABC’s of kindness’ by Samantha Berger before creating our own friendship recipe. To make our recipe we all had a turn at adding a quality we thought would make a good friend and took it in turns to stir our ideas in to make the best possible friend we could. The children thought of some wonderful ideas including sharing, helping, using kind hands and feet, giving hugs, saying please and thank you and making sure we include everyone when we are playing games.

30.09.25

Our All About Me boxes have been a hit! The children have loved sharing their photos with their adults and peers as well as their likes, dislikes and favourite toys and places.
We have created a lovely display from your contributions - thank you! ☺️

01.09.25

Hello Everyone!

Just two more sleeps to go until our exciting learning journey in RS is ready to commence…and we are so looking forward to welcoming you all!

The team will welcome the children into school from 8:45am on Wednesday 3rd September. For the first few days you are welcome to come and drop your child off at the classroom door then from the following Monday (8th) staff members will meet your child at the blue gates.

For the first couple of weeks we will be getting to know your child. The best way to do that is to play together, spend time talking and interacting. This will set the foundations that we can continue to build upon and introduce our Literacy and Mathematics learning programmes.

If your child has a medical need please ensure that all of their medication is dropped into the school office on Wednesday morning.

The team will be taking some photographs of our first days together to share with you. We can do this once all permissions are sought - so when I get the go ahead from admin I will share them with you.

I do like to be as paperless as possible, but please do look out for a few letters that will be placed inside your child’s bag this week which detail our curriculum plans, homework, reading book and record.

I hope that everyone is as excited as our Early Years team are.

Enjoy your last day tomorrow and we will see you Wednesday!

With best wishes,
Mrs Gent 😊
