Mindfulness Activities – Focus – 19.5.2020

Please find some more activities to help you to develop and maintain focus.  We hope you enjoy trying these activities out.

Finger Fiddle – Exercising your brain-body concentration

  • Stand or sit tall.  Take three soft, slow mindful breaths.  Press the fingertips at both hands together in front of your chest.
  • Keep your fingertips touching and tap your thumbs together five times. Say, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap.  
  • Now tap pointer fingers together five times.  Keep the other fingers still.  “Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap”
  • Tap your middle fingers, then your ring fingers then your pinky fingers.  Say “Tap, tap, tap, tap, tap” each time.
  • Now start with the pinky fingers and go back the other way to your thumbs.
  • Shake out your hands and wiggle your fingers when done.
  • Your brain is connected to the muscles in your fingers.  When you exercise your fingers, you exercise your brain too, which prepares you to focus.

Wise Old Owl – Guide yourself in making decisions.

  • Sit mindfully with your spine straight and body relaxed.  Close your eyes and take three soft, slow mindful breaths.
  • Imagine you are sitting under a tree.  On a branch is a wise old owl who knows the answer to any questions you have.  The Owl is always gentle and kind and knows what you need.  Ask the Owl the question.
  • Let the Owl think about the answer.  You can take three soft, slow mindful breaths while you wait.
  • Listen carefully when the owl answers your questions.
  • Picture yourself following the advice.  How does that make you feel?
  • If you need to ask the owl more questions until you know what to do.
  • Open your eyes.  Now ask yourself where did that wisdom come from?  You can always find the wise old inside you.
