On Wednesday night, 7 children from Year 5 and 6 represented St George’s Academy at the Darlington Primary Schools Football Association, the 22nd Annual 5 a side Competition. It was hosted at the Dolphin Centre and was the first time the children got to wear their brand new football kit (sponsored by MySportswear). They only went and won it and brought home the cup! We would like to thank Paul Bielby and his team for organising.
The boys were absolutely fantastic from minute 1 and not only played some excellent football, but conducted themselves on and off the pitch with integrity and respect. The team was made up of Jack R, Reece D, Toby G, Archy W, Max B, Jack L and Ethan W (pictured below). They only conceded 1 goal throughout the whole tournament (6 games played) and scored a total of 14 goals.
St George’s topped the group stage, winning all 4 of their 4 games, before beating St Bede’s in the semi final 2-0 to make it to the final. The boys met a strong Hurworth side in the final and the game finished 0-0. The game went into extra-time but it could still not be settled and was decided on penalties. After a tense penalty shootout with some fantastic finishes from both teams, Jack R was the hero, saving the 4th penalty and scoring the 5th to win the competition and bring the cup back to St George’s.
Mr Mackenzie took the boys and he said how proud he was of each and every one of them, they played some fantastic football and had a great team spirit, it was a really positive experience and they will remember that day for the rest of their lives. St George’s will now go on to represent Darlington in the next round.
A massive well done from all at St George’s.
