St George’s Win the Town Cup Double!
Yesterday, a group of year 5 and 6 boys went to Eastbourne Sports Complex, to compete in the famous Darlington football Town Cup.
12 schools attended and there were 3 groups of 4 teams. We found ourselves in a tough group alongside Whinfield, Heathfield and Abbey. We were first game on and came up against Heathfield. It took us a bit of time to settle into the game but we won the game 2-0. Both goals being scored by Ethan W. Up next, we played Whinfield and it was a tight game with not many chances for either team. The game finished 0-0 and left us on 4 points from 2 games.
We went into our last game knowing we needed to win to progress out the group stage. The lads really turned it on when it mattered and played some good football, winning comfortably 3-0 against Abbey who are always decent opposition and were the current holders of the cup. Another 2 goals from Ethan W and one for Thomas H with a great finish.
Although we were still unbeaten, it was a very tight group, with Whinfield also winning their other 2 games leaving us on 7 points each. Fortunately, we had scored 2 more goals than Whinfield and not conceded a goal so we went through to the next round on goal difference.
We played St Augustine’s in the first match of the next round. We had a lot of the ball and probably should have been a few goals up. The goal finally came with some great football and a good finish from Max B. We defended well but St Augustine’s got a free kick and smashed it in the bottom corner in the last minute of the game to draw 1-1.
After drawing, we regrouped and knew we needed to win our next game against Mowden. We played some fantastic football again and Jack L stepped it up a notch in this game, grabbing a brace to give us a chance of winning the competition. One goal being a screamer from the half way line, with his left foot!
We went into the last game on 4 points, knowing a win against Hurworth would see us lift the cup. We had many chances but just could not find the net, their keeper played a blinder and made some quality saves. The game ended 0-0 and although still unbeaten all day, the cup was no longer in our hands and we had to rely on the last match of the day for the overall outcome.
If Mowden beat St Augustine’s they would win the town cup and we would finish second. Fortunately for us, the result went our way and St Augustine’s beat them 2-0. Making us the winners of the town cup and completing the double after recently winning the Darlington 5-a-side competition. A magnificent achievement!
A massive well done to all the lads yesterday, Toby G, Archy W, Max B, Jack L, Ethan S, Ethan W, Thomas and Zac H. A special mention to both goalkeepers, Jack R and Reece D who were magnificent in goal all day and only conceded 1 goal all tournament between them. It was a real pleasure to coach the lads and see them excel in a sport they all love. They were a credit to our school.
Paul Bielby MBE, the founder of the Darlington Primary Schools FA and ex Manchester United player came into Praise Assembly this morning to present the lads with the trophy, thanks for coming along Paul. We would also like to thank Alison Raw for another well organised and excellently ran Town Cup and thanks to our kit sponsors Mysportswear.
St George’s will now go on to represent Darlington at the Tees Valley Finals.
Thanks for your continued support
